"Rate of Autism Increases as MMR II standardizes"
written by Gurney ('03)

This chart demonstrates the increase in the prevalence of autism in children born in the 80’s. The gradual increase – rather than a sudden increase – reflects:

  1. The gradual replacement of the MMoR with MMR II as the old supplies were used up.

  2. The gradual increase in acceptance of the MMR II as indicated by the immunization rates going from the 60+% in early 80’s to 80+% in the early ‘90’s, and reaching 90% only in ’94. More dramatic increases in autism are demonstrated in the ‘90’s.

  3. The appearance of PDD in the ‘80’s was reflected in the DSM changes. Increased recognition and then diagnosis seems more clearly established by the early ‘90’s, as reflected in the chart.
